Great question! We understand that the concept of a "race kit" can be confusing. Here’s what you need to know if you are participating in an edition of the Marathon des Sables (MDS).
What the MDS race kit contains
During the technical check before the start, each participant receives a race kit provided by the organization. This kit generally includes:
- 2 official bibs (one to wear on the chest, one on the backpack)
- 1 GPS tracker
- 1 official roadbook, detailing the stages and all useful information for the week
This kit is essential for your identification, safety, and navigation during the race.
What is not included: your personal clothes and equipment
Even though a kit is provided, it does not include your personal running clothes. Each participant must bring:
- Appropriate running clothes (top, bottom, socks, cap or hat)
- Appropriate trail shoes for desert and rugged terrains
- All mandatory equipment, including:
- Backpack (e.g., WAA ULTRABAG 20L or equivalent)
- Sleeping bag
- Headlamp + spare batteries or rechargeable battery
- Minimum capacity of 1.5L for water
- Safety equipment (whistle, emergency blanket, knife, mirror, etc.)
- Food for the entire period of self-sufficiency
The complete list of mandatory equipment is detailed in Article 23 of the regulations specific to your race (Jordan, Peru, Fuerteventura, Morocco, etc.).
In summary
Even if a race kit is provided to you, you must bring your running clothes and personal equipment. The MDS is a self-sufficient event, and good material preparation is essential for your safety and performance.
