The use of gaiters is highly recommended. Indeed, they will help prevent sand from getting into your shoes and bothering you during the adventure.
To put gaiters on your shoes, they must be attached by a cobbler, which can sometimes take up to 10 days, so you need to take care of this well in advance of the race and not at the last minute.
For shoes, it is recommended to use trail-type shoes with a gripping sole. Some runners prefer to take a size larger than usual to avoid being too tight if their feet swell due to heat, or being too cramped because of sand, bandages, or blisters. Feel free to try your shoes well before the race, in conditions similar to those of the MDS, to know which type of shoes suits you best.
Of course, you should be able to get somewhat used to your shoes before the race, so avoid new models.
